Irene Tse

Team Leader - Road Safety Engineer

Auckland Transport

Irene is a long term and much-loved Auckland Transport employee, who started her career with the Network Operations team at Auckland Council 14 years ago. Since the start of Auckland Transport in 2010, Irene has worked as a Team Leader for Road Safety Engineering in our Smales Farm Office. During her early years, Irene dreamed of being an Air Hostess, an Accountant and even a Nun! (Big aspirations for a 5 year old). However, it was her father who inspired her to move into engineering, having himself held a successful career in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in Melbourne and Hong Kong.

After graduating with a Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Auckland University, Irene spent 3 months in Hong Kong doing an internship in Structural Design. She is also a member of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (MIPENZ) since 2001 and a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) - International

The thing she enjoys most about the Road Safety work is the endless variety. Managing a team of 9 Road Safety Engineers, Irene's responsibilities include crash analysis, investigation, traffic modelling, design, delivering safety improvement work, consultation and working with communities.

Irene was the winner of the Road Corridor Operation Group overall 'STAR' award 2011, and is immensely proud to be part of the team that are contributing towards reducing road trauma and being one of the main contributors to achieving Auckland's overall road safety targets.

Irene's career has not been without its challenges, which include being female in a male dominant industry and not being a local. Recognising her own personal challenges, Irene is passionate about encouraging diversity within her own team and in turn has recruited a very diverse and passionate team of Road Safety Engineers. She is always looking for people who are equally passionate about road safety, and would encourage you to consider pursuing a rewarding career in Road Safety Engineering.
